What Is a Pulpotomy?
Inside every tooth is a soft area called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When a cavity becomes deep enough or a tooth experiences significant trauma, bacteria can reach the pulp and cause inflammation, infection, or pain.
A pulpotomy is a treatment that removes the damaged or infected portion of the pulp inside the crown of the tooth while preserving the healthy root structure underneath. After the affected tissue is removed, the tooth is cleaned, sealed, and often protected with a dental crown to help maintain strength and function.
This treatment is most commonly performed on baby teeth that still need to remain in place for several years.

What Happens During Pulpotomy Treatment

During the pulpotomy, the infected portion of the pulp is carefully removed from inside the tooth. The area is then cleaned and sealed to help prevent further infection. In many cases, a pediatric dental crown is placed afterward to restore strength and protect the tooth long-term.
